Ch 2 · Error Detection · Theory

Topic 2 of 10 in Networks & Data Transmission — How Machines Talk — 3 lessons.

Why Bits Go Wrong

Interference can flip a bit during transmission — a 0 becomes a 1. Error-detection methods let the receiver spot that something changed, so it can ask for the data again.

Parity Bits

A parity bit is one extra bit added to make the number of 1s follow an agreed rule. With even parity, the total number of 1s (data + parity) must be even.
