Topic 1 of 4 in Transport in Animals — IGCSE Biology 0610 — 38 lessons.

Introduction

Large, active animals cannot rely on diffusion to move oxygen and glucose to every cell. They need a circulatory system: a pump, a network of tubes and a fluid that carries materials around the body quickly. Mammals have a particularly effective arrangement, the double circulation, in which blood visits the heart twice on every trip around the body. Extended candidates also compare it with the single circulation of a fish.

Key ideas — What a circulatory system is

The Cambridge definition: the circulatory system is a system of blood vessels with a pump and valves to ensure one-way flow of blood.

🧑‍🏫 Teacher's explanation

Think of the circulatory system as a city's water supply network. You have a central pumping station (the heart) that pushes water through a complex web of pipes (blood vessels). To make sure the water doesn't slosh backward when the pump turns off or when pressure changes, you install one-way trapdoors (valves). This ensures that every house in the city receives a constant, steady stream of fresh water.

📖 Definitions

🔍 Worked example — Easy

Identify the three essential components required to describe a circulatory system as defined by the Cambridge syllabus.

🔍 Worked example — Standard

Compare the circulation of a fish with the double circulation of a mammal.

🔍 Worked example — Exam-style

A student claims that the primary purpose of valves in the circulatory system is to increase blood pressure. Evaluate this statement.

🎯 Exam question

Key ideas — The double circulation of a mammal

In a mammal blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit of the body. The heart is two pumps side by side, sending blood around two separate circuits.

🧑‍🏫 Teacher's explanation

Imagine a delivery company that uses two different routes to ensure efficiency. The first route is a short, quick shuttle between a local warehouse (the lungs) and the main hub (the heart) to reload oxygen. The second route is a long-distance trek from the hub to every single customer in the country (the body) and back. Because the hub (the heart) is so powerful, it can push the delivery trucks out with high pressure, ensuring they reach even the furthest customers quickly.

📖 Definitions

🔍 Worked example — Easy

Trace the path of a red blood cell starting from the right atrium and ending at the left atrium. List the structures in order.

🔍 Worked example — Standard

A mammal's heart pumps 5 liters of blood per minute. If the systemic circulation accounts for 70\% of the total cardiac output, calculate the volume of blood flowing through the aorta per minute.

🔍 Worked example — Exam-style

Compare the circulation of a fish with that of a mammal. Explain why the mammalian system is more efficient for active organisms.

🎯 Exam question

Key ideas — Single circulation in a fish and the advantages of double circulation

🧑‍🏫 Teacher's explanation

Think of a circulatory system like a city's water delivery network. In a single circulation (like a fish), it is like having one pump that sends water through a very narrow, clogged filter (the gills) before it reaches the houses. By the time the water reaches the houses, it has lost all its pressure and flows as a tiny trickle.

📖 Definitions

🔍 Worked example — Easy

A fish has a single circulation. Blood flows from the ventricle to the gills and then to the body. Explain why the blood pressure is low when it reaches the body tissues.

🔍 Worked example — Standard

Compare the efficiency of oxygen delivery in a fish and a mammal.

🔍 Worked example — Exam-style

A mammal's heart has a thick muscular left ventricle and a thinner-walled right ventricle. Explain the functional importance of this difference.

🎯 Exam question

(a) State one advantage of double circulation over single circulation. [1] (b) Explain how double circulation allows mammals to maintain a higher metabolic rate than fish. [3] [4 marks]

Worked example

Question. (a) Describe what is meant by a double circulation. [2] (b) Name the two circulations of a mammal and state where each takes blood. [2] (c) (Supplement) Explain two advantages of a double circulation compared with the single circulation of a fish. [4]

🔍 Worked example — Easy

Identify the correct sequence of blood flow in a mammal's double circulation, starting from the right ventricle.

🔍 Worked example — Standard

A student states that 'Double circulation is better because it separates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.' Explain why this separation is an advantage for a high-metabolism animal like a mammal.

🔍 Worked example — Exam-style

Compare the blood pressure in the systemic circulation of a mammal to the blood pressure after blood has passed through the gills in a fish.
