Ch 2 · The Operating System's Jobs — card 1 of 2.
The operating system (OS) manages the computer's resources so programs can run. Its main jobs:
- Memory management — deciding which program uses which part of RAM
- Processor (process) management — scheduling which task the CPU runs next
- File management — organising files and folders on storage
- Device/peripheral management — controlling printers, disks, screens
- Providing a user interface — a way for people to interact (GUI or command line)
- Security — user accounts, permissions, passwords
